Is Kundalini Activation required for Liberation 

Kundalini is the pool of concentrated potential energy that resides in every human being.  This pool of energy lays dormant in the lower chakras patiently awaiting to be awakened. While many believe this energy must be awakened for spiritual growth, there are others who believe it is not necessary.  

 

So this begs the question, is this potential energy required for liberation?

 

The short answer is: No. However, it CAN be used as a mean to liberate yourself. 

 

To be liberated while still retaining the body appearance, one must have the power of viveka (i.e. spiritual discrimination).  This power is enhanced dramatically through yogic samadhi and by kundalini.  The power of viveka is required to pull attention in reverse in order to expose source (Brahman) where attention now becomes unbroken. Only the Sages or enlightened masters have this power.  Some Sages who incarnate in the physical realm decide to do so for their last time, in which case their intellect (used for discrimination) is pure. If the intellect (most deepest/subtlest part of the mind) is pure, it means their sushumna or their energy pathway to higher states of consciousness is clear for attention to travel through. This means attention will not be blocked in other lower regions from the karma/conditionings that prevent it from being conscious of deeper states.  

 

However, some Sages choose to incarnate as a means to help uplift others while still being engaged in the play of Maya.  Most of these Sages choose to forget their status before operating in the physical realm as a means to enjoy ignorantly and while being completely unconscious of their true power.  Nonetheless, they will eventually awaken (which is their birth right given they held this status before incarnating as a choice).  They will get the help from other Sages operating in the higher realms who serve as guides or their inner guru.  Because the Sages who incarnate to lower realms completely forget and become immersed in the dramatic play of physical duality, they also absorb many of the conditionings from experiencing these lower states of consciousness.  This builds up karma and imprints in their mind or subtle body which blocks them from understanding who they truly are (not just as a Sage but also their deeper identity as Brahman).  To awaken them and to clear these conditions all up at once, the kundalini energy is used as the primary means to spiritually cleanse.  This energy will naturally awaken at the right time on their journey, as previously ordained prior to incarnation. The energy will not just help clear away all the karma and imprints that have built up during their journey in the physical realm but will also help them experience their true self through its use in that lifetime.  The experience itself will completely transform them and will keep them grounded on their highest purpose.  As the energy stirs up and explodes forcing it to the highest chakra (deepest reality), it will clear away all karma and conditionings to make the sushumna pathway clear for attention to travel through going forward.  The seeker will now become fit for inquiry (i.e. nididhyasana), if they choose to liberate themselves while retaining the appearance of the waking body.​

Sages who plan to operate in the physical realm especially in an age of ignorance and suffering, their circumstance may necessitate a kundalini awakening to clear up these deep and almost un-removable conditionings.  However, there are very few who incarnate here to spiritually liberate themselves and so they assume a life where they awaken much sooner (with or without kundalini).  This doesn't mean that prana and energy doesn't need to be awakened for spiritual liberation.  It just means the pool of potential energy is not necessarily needed to take ones attention to Turiya (i.e. witness consciousness).  It can be done just by using their already pure mind.  And so a pure mind doesn't require the extra pool of energy (kundalini) to take awareness to the highest level.  Where the mind goes, prana will naturally follow. The kundalini is just extra energy that can help take awareness's own innate attention to source as it helps the seeker gravitate to a higher state of consciousness without drifting and keeping attention buried in lower expressions of the self.  Not everyone will be able to take their energy all the way because of the pile of conditionings or karma that has formed roadblocks, preventing one from going to the deeper parts of the mind, or in other words, jumping from one chakra to the next.

The Sages who are more inclined to not to reap their reward of spiritual liberation will most likely awaken their kundalini and use the divine energy as a means to gather wisdom and expound truths to mankind for upliftment.  This is because they continue to hold their status of Sage while enjoying the dream of Maya.  The only thing truly purposeful is to expound these truths as nothing else is really worthy.  And so, the kundalini is not just used to burn karma to retain their status after death (avoiding the build up of karma that can keep them glued to lower realms out of desire), but to also enjoy the play of maya by using the knowledge revealed by kundalini (divine intelligence) to help others. The Sages who incarnate to be liberated however, have no such desire since everything (including that of being a teacher/guru or the wisdom they hold) will need to be totally given up to give up the dream.

So while kundalini activation may be a sign of spiritual maturity, it need not necessarily be awakened for the Sages who incarnate solely to be liberated.  This means if you are not a Sage, you will eventually go through a kundalini awakening at some point in your lifetime(s). Kundalini activation marks spiritual maturity, especially if one can transmit the energy deep enough to the most subtle realm (Brahmaloka) and who can also use it to help transcend the appearance by exposing turiya. It is one of the most powerful tools that can be leveraged to enhance viveka in order for one to fully plunge in Turiya more faster and efficiently.  Kundalini activation will be a natural phenomena to those who are spiritually qualified and is something every individual will experience in their past lives or leading up to liberation.  This means the Sages who incarnate to liberate themselves have already experienced this activation in past lives since it has been used to clear the pathways to cultivate their extremely purified mind.  It is also natural in most cases for the kundalini to automatically ascend when you take attention alone to the deepest recesses of the mind.

The process of liberation is a highly conscious process.  In this process, you receive wisdom or divine revelations on how to liberate yourself from the dream.  Because kundalini is a purely intelligent energy, it provides one wisdom on how to do this.  This means if you are qualified, Kundalini can also help you go into mahasamadhi, if you consciously decide to discard the physical body through liberation in the higher realms (Note: this liberation does not retain the body's appearance).  If one does not hold the wisdom of how to liberate themselves from their own inner being, without reliance on anyone else, then they do not possess the power to liberate themselves! Therefore, we must work to purify the mind, and someday awaken the kundalini so we can allow this amazingly divine intelligent energy to transform us and guide us in the right direction towards emancipation.​
